Lynda (Demaline) Lasorella
May 18, 1944 – December 31, 2007

If your phone call was answered by a helpful, pleasant voice or perhaps you were greeted with a smile upon entering the Corporate Headquarters lobby, you had the privilege of meeting Lynda (Demaline) Lasorella. Lynda has been battling a reoccurring form of cancer for over five years. She was always cheerful and an inspiration to all of us. Her never failing courage and wonderful sense of humor will always be remembered. We will miss her.

CURRENT EVENTS

Avon/Avon Lake Relay for Life

“Each year, across the nation, one event brings together entire communities to take part in the fight against cancer. That event is the American Cancer Society Relay For Life®. It’s a time and place where people come to celebrate those who have survived cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight back against a disease that touches too many lives.”

“Celebrate, remember, and fight back; your involvement will help the American Cancer Society work toward a mission of eliminating cancer as major health issue and will support much-needed services in your community. Thanks in part to the donations from Relay For Life and other events, the Society is saving lives, helping those touched by cancer, and empowering people to fight this disease all over the world.”

On June 7 & 8, 2008 Willoway Nurseries, Inc. will be participating in the Avon/Avon Lake Relay for Life to support the American Cancer Society. “Because cancer never sleeps,” our team will walk around the track at Avon Lake High School for 24 hours in support of those who are fighting cancer and those who have been lost to the disease. Employees and friends of Willoway are asking for your support to raise money for cancer prevention and research. Visit our team webpage to make a donation to “Team Willoway” or click on the member of the team who you wish to support personally.

The Gardens of Willoway Nurseries, Inc.

We welcome you to walk through the gardens at the main nursery in Avon, Ohio.  The front planting project started as a trial garden for new selections and introductions.  Tom Demaline, President of Willoway Nurseries, Inc. has turned it into a beautiful garden stretching almost ½ mile in front of the main nursery.  Recently, a mill house and water wheel was added to the display to enhance the charm. We also added more water features, walks, and walls to give you a new view with each change in direction while walking in the garden.

The design is eclectic and intended as a place to show visitors the new plant selections and present ideas regarding how to use our products.  There is a mix of plant material that gives examples of color texture and form.  I asked Mr. Demaline if it was a true trial garden and Tom replied, “No just a landscape garden in progress.  A true gardener knows that it will never be done but will just evolve with the times.”

Many local organizations, garden clubs and green industry meetings are held in the gardens.  The Wholesale Nursery Growers of America and the American Nursery and Landscape Association will be visiting the nursery as part of the “Kick the Dirt” tour and talks for Northeast Ohio.  The Meetings start September 19 and go through the 21st.

If you are in the area please contact your sales representative for a personal tour.

We hope to see you soon!

Willoway Nurseries, Inc. President
Tom Demaline selected as the
2005 Nursery Grower of the Year!

Tom Demaline has been selected by his peers as Nursery Management & Production (NMPRO) 2005 Nursery Grower of the Year, sponsored by Pursell Technologies Inc.

Demaline is president of Willoway Nurseries in Avon, Ohio, a company that isn't afraid to move ahead of the curve. It often takes risky steps to pioneer new ideas.

The company was one of the first Midwestern nurseries to dedicate large portions of production to pot-in-pot growing. Willoway is also on the forefront of producing tree liners in retractable-roof greenhouses. Willoway was one the first to join the Novalis group, a cooperative of nurseries nationwide whose goal is to sell branded lines of plants.

These risks have paid big dividends, and Willoway Nurseries is poised for strong continued growth. For taking these actions, Demaline was named the 2005 NMPRO Nursery Grower of the Year.

The NMPRO Nursery Grower of the Year program began in 1997, and winners are chosen by a panel of industry peers: Gordon Bailey Jr., Bailey Nurseries, St. Paul, Minn., 2000 NMPRO Nursery Grower of the Year; Peter Orum, Midwest Groundcovers, St. Charles, Ill., 2001 NMPRO Nursery Grower of the Year; Charlie Parkerson, Lancaster Farms Inc., Suffolk, Va., 2002 NMPRO Nursery Grower of the Year; Dale Deppe, Spring Meadow Nursery, Grand Haven, Mich., 2003 NMPRO Nursery Grower of the Year; and Richard VanLandingham, Monrovia Growers, Azusa, Calif., 2004 NMPRO Nursery Grower of the Year.

For a complete account of Demaline's contributions, read the November issue of NMPRO, or access the article on GreenBeam.com at www.greenbeam.com.

Nursery Management and Production Magazine is published monthly by Branch-Smith Publishing, a Fort Worth, Texas, company that has been publishing trade journals for the horticulture industry since 1915. In addition to two publications for retailers -- Garden Center Merchandising & Management Magazine (GCM&M) and Garden Center Products & Supplies (GCP&S) -- Branch-Smith also publishes Greenhouse Management & Production (GMPRO).
