Native to the US, American Beech is a large sturdy shade tree with rounded crown. Dark green glossy leaves turn copper colored in fall and hold thru winter. Produces edible beechnuts. Native habit is moist or wet lowland sites. Not suitable as a landscape tree.
Beech develops suckers and entire beech groves can grow from the roots of a single tree. Shallow root system so difficult to grow grass under it - very susceptible to root zone disturbance and drought.
