Fragrant purple-red or fuchsia flowers have paler tones inside and bloom shortly before foliage appears on a more compact shrubby habit. Blooms 2-4 weeks later, in mid-April to early May, helping to reduce the risk of damage from frost. Slow growing deciduous shrub or small tree may sporadically repeat bloom in mid summer.
