Dense branching and foliage on a slow growing compact shrub. Thick dark green, spineless leaves turn olive green in Winter. Grows well in average, moist to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers rich, constantly moist soils in full sun. 'Compacta' is a female cultivar and needs a male pollinator to produce jet black inkberries. Berries mature in early Fall and persist through Winter unless consumed by birds.
